It depends upon your tolerance and acceptance of the drugs, but yes, they tend to be very effective in the short term. The memories, or special abilities, can be tapped while the drugs are in effect, but once they have faded the effects will also go. The memories, however, if capable of being revived, will remain your own - although it will be more like living a movie and less like your own life.
This is, of course, entirely dependent on the memories still being intact and simply inaccessible at this present moment. Should the portion of your brain housing these memories be destroyed or removed, they will be gone forever.
